Challenges & Goals
Atari, one of gaming’s most iconic brands, turned to UberStrategist to support the launch of Atari XP, a new initiative focused on reviving rare and limited-release games as authentic Atari 2600 cartridges.
The goal was to position Atari XP as a premium preservation effort for collectors and retro gaming fans while generating mainstream media interest around the first three-game collection.
Strategic Approach
We kicked off the campaign with targeted outreach to press known for retro and classic game coverage, prioritizing journalists with a personal connection to Atari’s legacy. Our messaging focused on Atari XP’s mission to preserve rare titles and create something meaningful for collectors and enthusiasts.
To maximize early buzz, we partnered with CNET to exclusively break the news and delivered embargoed pitches to additional key outlets. Outreach was carefully timed to build momentum and sustain awareness across both enthusiast and mainstream audiences.
Results
The Atari XP launch generated strong coverage across retro enthusiast, tech, and gaming media. We secured exclusive features in Forbes, CBR, and PCMag, and landed widespread pickup from top-tier outlets including MSN, Yahoo! Games, Destructoid, MXDWN, Hobby Consolas, Gamepur, PC Welt, and Bleeding Cool.
By blending nostalgia-driven storytelling with collector-focused messaging, we helped Atari turn a niche preservation effort into a widely celebrated launch that resonated with both retro fans and mainstream media.
