Challenges & Goals
Cargo Films and Releasing tapped UberStrategist to promote the digital release of Insert Coin, a documentary chronicling the rise of Midway Games and its legendary franchises, including NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat, that helped define an era of arcade gaming.
With just one month during the crowded holiday season, and following a limited pre-release at SXSW, our task was to build excitement and drive meaningful attention to the film’s digital debut.
Strategic Approach
We announced the release with an exclusive to Shacknews, giving the campaign early traction with core gaming media. From there, we pitched review opportunities and secured interviews with fan-favorite Midway developers to tap into nostalgia and industry interest.
Our outreach spanned traditional games press, entertainment media, and fan-centric platforms, ensuring wide coverage for the film and its cultural significance.
Results
The news exclusive with Shacknews was syndicated by 24 outlets, including IGN and GameSpot. Additional top-tier coverage appeared in Game Informer, Ars Technica, and Famitsu.
We also secured developer interviews on Game Informer’s podcast, multiple Shacknews livestreams, and a special head-to-head session with Hot 97’s HipHopGamer, connecting the film to gaming fans and pop culture audiences alike.
The campaign gave Insert Coin a strong media presence and helped reintroduce Midway’s iconic legacy to a new generation.
