Challenges & Goals

Free League returned to UberStrategist for support on their latest Kickstarter campaign, Coriolis: The Great Dark. As a longtime partner, the studio trusted us to apply our proven strategy for crowdfunding success.

The main challenge was positioning this new title as a true sequel rather than just another expansion—especially since Coriolis lacked the mainstream recognition of Free League’s other franchises like ALIEN or Blade Runner.

Strategic Approach

We pre-seeded news with trusted outlets to build early awareness ahead of the Kickstarter launch. From there, we positioned Coriolis: The Great Dark as a true sequel—not just another expansion.

To support that framing, we leaned into Free League’s respected brand and popular Year Zero Engine, working closely with the design team to develop messaging and creating a Q&A document to answer common questions from the media. To draw in press who were unfamiliar with the franchise, we led with vivid comparisons like “Deadwood meets The Terror in space.”

Results

Our outreach secured an exclusive with Dicebreaker and widespread coverage across additional outlets, including Comicbook.com, ICv2, Bell of Lost Souls, TechRaptor, and Rascal. Coverage also extended beyond core tabletop media, including Bloody Disgusting, which latched onto the horror aspects we highlighted in our outreach.

The Kickstarter campaign gained rapid traction, reaching full funding in just seven minutes and pulling in over $80,000 USD within the first half hour. By the end, nearly 7,000 backers had joined the project, and 14 stretch goals were unlocked. The momentum behind the campaign made it clear that fans were ready for a bold new chapter in the Coriolis universe.
